Deep Teeth Cleaning
Deep Teeth Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
Deep teeth cleaning is often the first treatment for periodontal disease. It removes plaque and tartar that cause gum inflammation and infection and may be used as a treatment or preventive measure for gingivitis and moderate to severe periodontal disease.
After a thorough exam and possibly X-rays, scaling and root planing may be recommended based on gum health and pocket depth. Local anesthesia may be used.
- Scaling: Removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces, especially below the gum line, using specialized tools. Antimicrobial irrigation may be used to reduce bacteria.
- Root planing: Smooths the tooth roots by removing bacteria, toxins, and rough deposits, helping gums heal and preventing future bacterial buildup.
Antibiotics or antimicrobial treatments may be used to control infection. If deep pockets cannot be cleaned effectively, surgery may be necessary.
Scaling and root planing help prevent disease progression, reduce harmful bacteria linked to systemic health issues, protect against tooth loss, improve breath, and remove surface stains for a cleaner appearance.
